Hi! Welcome to the Kolor Me Kid art blog. Along with some wonderful instructors, I have been teaching art in afterschool programs, Montessori Schools, and private schools in the Chicagoland area for the last ten years. I’d love to share some of the lessons and students work we have done over those years.

Teacher Example

Ceramic Clay Witches Hat Luminaria

For the students, nothing beats working with ceramic clay.
Since I bring my lessons out to the schools and each lesson slot runs for one hour it can be a little tricky, but with a well-planned lesson and a well-organized approach everything goes smoothly

CHRIS VAN ALLSBURG “THE WIDOW’S BROOM”

In this lesson we read the wonderful children’s book
“THE WIDOW’S BROOM” by Chris Van Allsburg
to the students.

They then create a drawing of
the witches’ hat and broom using markers.

“Edward Gorey”

“Edward Gorey”
Black Cat with Witches Hat Lesson

In this lesson we talk about Edward Gorey’s art work
and students are shown examples of his work.

They then create a drawing of a Halloween cat
using a style reminiscent of the artists.

Papier-mâché Halloween Shaker Lesson

"Cat Noir" Fall Poster Art Lesson

Theohile-Alexandre Stinlen's "Cat Noir" with it's black cat and bright orange background lends itself so well to a fall lesson.

So many of my students seem to be natural poster artists by the fact that they always want to write words all over they're drawings i.e. "this is my..." and I always seem to be telling them they can't, but with our poster lesson they finally got their chance.
In this lesson the students learn about the art of the poster. We talk about theohile-Alexandre Stinlen and they are shown some of his work along with other famous poster art.

FALL IS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE TIME OF THE YEAR.
WITH THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR STARTING AND AUTUMN JUST AROUND THE CORNER I THOUGHT I'D POST SOME OF THE PAST FALL LESSONS I'VE DONE WITH MY STUDENTS.

FALL WATERCOLOR PENCIL LEAF LESSON

In our watercolor pencil fall leaf lesson, students are shown examples of leaf studies created by various artists and become aware of how to recognize the different drawing styles and media used by different artists. We talk about how artists often will do a series of drawings or a study of a subject, using the same media and style for each painting or drawing. The students then create two examples of a fall leaf using watercolor pencil and incorporating the same style in both.
